Derry City Council’s chief executive, Sharon O’Connor has welcomed the appointment of John Kelpie to the top post in the new ‘super council’.

Mr Kelpie’s appointment to the post, of chief executive in the new Derry and Strabane District Council, is the second such achievement by Derry City Council staff, following the announcement that Anthony Tohill would become chief executive of the new Mid-Ulster Council.

Ms O’Connor said: “I have already congratulated John and have enjoyed working with him in his existing role as Strategic Director of Derry City Council. I am personally delighted with this news and with the recent appointment of Anthony Tohill as new Chief Executive of the new Mid-Ulster Council, two of Derry’s strategic leaders will be in the forefront of a new era in Local Government. He has a flair for the implementation and delivery of key strategies across local government. His good nature and professional manner in dealing with partners and stakeholders is widely acknowledged. As the Chief Executive of the new council he brings all the attributes to move forward to the super council where I have no doubt he will have a leading role delivering real and positive change for the North West region. During this transition period we will continue to work together in close partnership with a focus on the positive legacy of City of Culture and the City’s One Plan.”

The chairman of the Statutory Transition Committee, Councillor Kieran McGuire congratulated Mr Kelpie on his appointment.

He said: “I am delighted to announce that the Statutory Transition Committee (STC) has appointed John Kelpie to this hugely important role. Throughout this demanding recruitment and selection process John clearly demonstrated he has the key competencies required for this challenging role. We sought someone with a proven ability to focus on the future, demonstrate leadership, promote and facilitate change, deliver excellence, serve the community and effectively work with partners.

“The STC is delighted that John has accepted our offer and we look forward to working with him in creating a new Council for the citizens of this strategically significant region.”
