COURT IN DERRY Derry no10-1/6/2014-TREVOR MCBRIDE PICTURE 23 year old Bridget Mongan who appeared at court in Derry charged jointly charged with assaulting a semi-conscious patient at Altnagelvin Hospital Intensive Care Unit on Saturday-see story George Jackson

An Intensive Care Unit patient was so ‘terrified’ by an alleged assault on another patient he died the following day, a court has heard.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the claim as 23-year-old Bridget Patricia Mongan and 29-year-old Eileen Selina Stokes applied for bail.

Mongan, of Stanley’s Walk, and Stokes, with an address in Newtownstewart, are charged with attempted grievous bodily harm, common assault and disorderly behaviour.

The charges relate to an alleged incident in the ICU of Altnagelvin Hospital on January 4.

A previous court hearing was told the alleged injured party, Mongan’s brother and Stokes’ husband, was in a semi conscious state as a result of head and spinal injuries.

It is alleged Mongan slapped and punched her brother about the face and shouted abuse at the medical staff.

Both women allegedly tried to pull drips from the patient and his medical condition became more unstable as a result.

Opposing a bail application yesterday, an investigating officer said the alleged injured party has been released from the ICU but remains in hospital.

The court also heard doctors are concerned the women would repeat their behaviour and this would affect the alleged injured party’s recovery.

The investigating officer said police also have fears for the safety of staff and other patients in the hospital.

An investigating officer revealed that a patient in ICU who witnessed the alleged assault was ‘distressed’ and ‘terrified’, as was his wife who was also present.

He added that the man was expected to pass away at a later date, but died the following day.

The officer said doctors were concerned that this man had to experience ‘such an unpleasant incident’.

Refusing bail, District Judge Barney McElholm said: “I’m not going to take the chance that something like this happens again”.

The women will appear in court on February 13.
