Shots have been fired in Derry during an armed robbery at a bookmakers.

The robbery took place on Monday evening in the Pennyburn area of the city.

A man, who was covering his face with a hood and a scarf, entered the premises at St Francis Terrace shortly before 7pm.

He demanded money from a member of staff, before firing two shots.

Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Cooper said it was “a very worrying development, as it’s the second robbery of a business in the locality in

just over 48 hours.”

He added: “Any robbery is an extremely traumatic event for the victims. The criminals who carry them out do so without any care for those they may hurt in the process, nor with any regard for the wider community.”

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area on Monday night and witnessed the incident to contact them.
