Derry’s new ‘super council’ could have its first ever chief executive as early as next week.

Interviews for the top job are scheduled for Wednesday with an appointment expected that same day.

The new chief, who will earn a salary of between £95,000 and £110,000, will oversee a newly created local authority area which will include both Derry and Strabane. It’s understood Derry man John Kelpie, a strategic director with Derry City Council, is among the candidates for the new job.

Another of the Council’s strategic team, Anthony Tohill, was this week appointed to the top job with the new ‘super council’ in Mid-Ulster.

Mr. Tohill, who has been with Derry Council for more than a decade, is originally from Swatragh in South Derry.

The 43-year-old helped Derry to All-Ireland glory in 1993 and managed the Ireland Australian rules team in 2010.

The new chief executive appointments are initially being made by ‘Statutory Transition Committees’ in advance of the creation of the new councils later this year.
