A County Derry teacher has been invited to Westminster to launch a report based on an innovative scheme he devised to promote reading in schools.

Leo McCloskey, vice principal of Termoncanice Primary School, Limavady, will travel to the House of Commons later this month at the invitation of Shadow Minister for School, Kevin Brennan MP.

Mr McCloskey will attend the launch of a new literacy report, ‘What Children Are Reading 2014,’ which was prepared for parliament by leading academic, Professor Keith Topping, Dundee University.

The report uses the school’s ‘Lift Off’ literacy programme, devised by Mr McCloskey, as a case study.

The local teacher came up with the programme last year to build on the success of the school’s accelerated reading programme. Explaining how it works, Mr McCloskey said; “The key component of Lift Off is that children will read books which are within their ability level and which match their interest level. In plain terms pupils select books they like at a level they are able to read.”

The pupils then write reviews on the books they have read. Parents are also involved in order to promote reading in the home.

It is aimed at primary two and primary three children and has already had an impact at Termoncanice with literacy scale scores doubling for p3 pupils and oral reading fluency scores doubling for p3 pupils.

Mr McCloskey is hoping to build on the success of the scheme and aims to make Termoncanice the first school in the North to be a ‘master school’ in accelerated reading. The school has already been awarded ‘model school’ status and Mr McCloskey has been accredited as a master school co-ordinator.
