16 year-old dies from meningitis

A priest has described the Cloughcor teenager who died from meningitis at the weekend as having a "great zest for life."

Sixteen year-old Terri Devine died in Altnagelvin hospital on Sunday morning after becoming ill last Thursday.

Leckpatrick priest Fr John Doherty said the death of teenager, came as a terrible blow to the local community.

Fr Doherty, who has been supporting the family since the tragedy, said: "Her family are grief-stricken but their faith is strong and it is giving them strength at this difficult time. "Terri was a lovely young girl who was full of life. She had just celebrated her 16th birthday a few days before she took sick. She was a very bright and intelligent girl who had a great zest for life. I baptised Terri and would have known her well when she was at primary school in Glenmornan. She moved on to Holy Cross College where she was in fifth year.

"My thoughts and prayers are with her parents and her sister Karen and indeed her whole family and circle of friends. Her family and friends are devastated by her tragic death and Christmas has taken a back seat here. It is a terrible blow to the whole community," he said.

Letters have been sent to the parents of other pupils at Holy Cross College informing them of a case of meningitis at the school. Holy Cross principal, Maria Doherty, described the 16 year-old as a vibrant pupil witha great future ahead of her. "The Board of Governors, staff and pupils have been devastated by the sudden and unexpected death of Terri. She was one of the first students we took into the school in September 2004 and from the outset she was a vibrant student who was looked up to by both staff and pupils. She had a great future ahead of her. Terri was also a great sportswoman and played on the school's gaelic team and represented Holy Cross on many occasions," the principal added.
