£1,000 reward to snare bus vandals

Translink have offered a reward of £1,000 to help snare vandals who have repeatedly attacked buses in Strabane in recent weeks.

The Ulsterbus depot at Bradley Way has come under fire from stone-throwing youths who smashed windows in several vehicles.

Police have teamed up with Translink to help bring those behind the orgy of vandalism, to justice.

Simon Corrigan, Western Area Manager, Translink, said: "We condemn all anti-social behaviour and appeal to the public to act responsibly when using public transport.

"To encourage the public to report instances of anti-social behaviour, Translink operate a reward scheme which will make a cash payment of up to 1,000 to any member of the public who witness any incident of trespass, vandalism or assault against a member of staff and is prepared to give evidence in court, resulting in a conviction."

PSNI Area Commander Chief Inspector Phil Marshall confirmed that CCTV footage was available.

However, he added: “If anyone has information in relation to these incidents, then they need to contact us.

“While we will continue to look at all available evidence, we cannot rely on CCTV footage alone. Often the quality is not good and, therefore, it has little evidential value.

“What we need are witnesses who can identify those involved and give that information to police.

"The support of the community is vital in condemning these incidents and in helping us with our investigation.

“If you see a group of people hanging around the depot late at night, or if you witness someone causing damage to a bus,, then contact police immediately.

“As parents, community leaders and police, we simply cannot allow individuals to recklessly destroy property in this manner."
