20 jobs to go at Gem
Twenty jobs, or a fifth of the workforce, are to go at a Derry call centre by June.
A spokesperson for Gem, which operates from the former Claremont Presbyterian Church on Northland Road, says it's currently talking to the workforce about the situation.
Where possible, workers are being offered alternative employment at Gem's other site in Belfast.
The redundancies follow an announcement to workers recently that there had been a reduction in volume of one of their contracts.
A company spokesperson told the 'Sunday Journal' yesterday that it was still operating two contracts at its centre in Derry although there had been a "volume reduction" in one of them.
Gem was established nine years ago and is a privately owned outsource contact centre.
Just a few weeks ago, the company announced it was going to create 900 new jobs in Northern Ireland.
At that time, Derry was not ruled out as a possible location for some of the new jobs.
New business from Republic
Chief executive Philip Cassidy said then that they were expecting to secure new business from the Republic of Ireland.
Gem is Northern Ireland's largest home grown contact centre and the 5.5m investment from Invest NI in the new project was expected to generate 14 million annually in salaries.
The company employs more than 1,000 people at a number of facilities across the North.
