400-year town charter plans

Limavady Borough Council has wished the maiden city well during its 2013 UK City of Culture, and has revealed it will be hosting a number of its own events to celebrate 400 years since Limavady’s town charter was granted.

As the programme of events for Derry’s ‘City of Culture’ was revealed yesterday, including legendary singer/songwriter Elvis Costello playing on June 27th at the Pavillion in the city, Limavady Council sent their good wishes.

“The people and Council of Limavady applaud yesterday’s launch of the City of Culture programme for next year. It’s a fantastic achievement, and we wish the City well over the next twelve months,” said a spokesperson. “For Council, the priority will be to ensure that our own local events, such as the Stendhal Festival and the Jazz and Blues Festiva,l can work around and with the Culture programme, but Limavady has its own reasons to celebrate next year. While Limavady can lay claim to well-known characters and events such as ‘Danny Boy’, ‘Colmcille’ and the ‘Broighter Gold’, 2013 will be a very special year for the area, marking 400 years since its town charter was granted. ”

The hospitality industry
locally also hopes to benefit from the year ahead.

George Graham, general manager of the Roe Park Resort, Limavady, said: “Since being named the City of Culture 2013, Derry and the North West have been thrust into the global spotlight. The city has been included in Lonely Planet’s list of ‘must see’ destinations and it is predicted that tourist numbers are set to double during the year. The influx will help increase the international identity of the region and present the hospitality industry with a unique opportunity to generate considerable economic benefits and enhance employment prospects.”
