£90k bill to police flags
The ongoing Union flags’ protests in Limavady and beyond has cost approximately £90,000 in police overtime for G District officers, including those in Limavady, according to a local councillor, writes Sheena Jackson.
SDLP Colr. Michael Coyle said the news emerged from questions he asked PSNI Area Commander Chief Inspector, Sam Donaldson at the Policing Committee of the Limavady Policing and Community Safety Partnership yesterday. To date, there have been at least six Union flag protests in Limavady, but the ‘Journal’ understands a number of officers based at Limavady PSNI station have been deployed to protests in numerous places, including Belfast and Derry.
“I asked if there was an impact on the delivery of policing services in Limavady and Mr. Donaldson told me ‘no’, that normal policing had carried on” said Colr, Coyle.
“The other question I asked was if it didn’t apply to the local budget surely it impacts the policing budget for all of the North, which would indirectly affect the Limavady budget, and he didn’t deny that,” said Colr. Coyle. “I feel any money spent on the flags protests is money that could be spent better elsewhere tackling everyday crime. It’s not a great amount of money, but it’s money we could use for policing within the Limavady borough.”
