A volley of more than a dozen shots were fired from an automatic rifle on the edge of the Bogside on Sunday evening.

Mourners at the wake of well known Derry republican Brian McFadden witnessed two armed and masked men outside a house in Little Diamond in the Bogside at around 8.15pm.

One of the men was armed with a small firearm and the other with a AK47 rifle. Up to 14 shots were fired from the automatic rifle on the street outside the home of the late republican.

Mr McFadden had been associated with the Republican Network for Unity, which is regarded as the political wing of Oglaigh Na hEireann. A republican source indicated that the masked men were members of the dissident republican paramilitary group. A police spokesperson said yesterday the PSNI had “no record” on the incident.

Mr McFadden’s funeral will leave his home tomorrow morning at 9.30am going to St Eugene’s Cathedral for Requiem Mass at 10 o’clock. Burial will follow at Burt cemetery.
