Anderson challenges DUP over education vote

Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has challenged the DUP to explain why they allowed a £25 million funding package for special needs education to be delayed.

Ms Anderson said the delay in the funding being processed came after the DUP voted against a motion about the Department of Education’s Special Educational Needs and social inclusion policy. The motion called for the 25 million ring-fenced for the project to be used to implement it.

“The DUP have a lot of explaining to do as they are the only party in the Assembly to oppose the publication of the Special Education Needs and Inclusion Review (SEN Review). This review, by some of the most eminent experts in the field of special needs education, is eagerly anticipated across the education sector, as it will release 25m into the system and completely modernize how children affected with special educational needs are dealt with.”

“The publication of this important Review has already been delayed for several months, yet the DUP continue to block the report going out to consultation. In effect, they are preventing the families and the teachers of Special Educational Needs children and others from having their say on the report. The DUP are blatantly censoring public opinion on this important document,” she said.
