Anger at fly-tippers on city’s back roads

A Derry Sinn Fein councillor has criticised those responsible for illegal dumping on back roads behind Creggan.
Colr. Colly Kelly said he was contacted by local residents who are concerned about dumping in the Glassagh and Creevagh areas on the outskirts of the city.
The cityside councillor said he visited the area and found piles of rubbish, including building waste, dumped by the side of the road.
“The problem of dumping in the Glassagh and Creevagh areas has been ongoing now for a number of years. Local residents contacted me about this issue and I went to the area to find all sorts of rubbish and building materials there,” he said.
Colr. Kelly said those responsible for the dumping are not from the Creggan area.
“Sinn Féin is concerned not only about the environmental damage being done here but the long term health of local residents due to this indiscriminate fly-tipping by people from outside the greater Creggan area who have no vested interest in the health nor well-being of the local community,” he said.
He also said the area is popular with walkers. “This area is widely used by local people going for walks.
“The last thing they want to be greeted with is a pile of rubbish dumped at the side of the roadway.
“As a councillor for the area I condemn this thoughtless behaviour. I will be in touch with the appropriate agencies to try and get this cleaned up in the short term and to look at what more can be done to prevent this in the long term.”
