A new campaign to warn of the dangers of fireworks and bangers was launched at Free Derry Corner yesterday by the Mayor of Derry, the PSNI, and local community workers.

The Mayor, councillor Kevin Campbell, welcomed the campaign saying; “Hopefully, parents and children will listen to this message about how dangerous these fireworks and bangers are and there might be fewer children hurt and less fear amongst the older or more vulnerable members of the community.”

PSNI neighbourhood inspector Trevor McKeown said; “Setting off fireworks may seem like a harmless activity to you but, not only are you taking risks with your own safety, you are disturbing people in the local community and frightening pets. I cannot stress enough how dangerous it is to use fireworks which have not been approved in line with health and safety regulations. We do not want to see anyone injured or maimed.”

Stella McCauley, Coordinator of the YES Project said: “We along with CRJ and Off the Street Initiative, are also delivering Anti Fireworks related Youth Intervention Programmes in the Shantallow and Galliagh areas and delivering posters with important safety information to schools throughout the City.”
