Police are appealing for witnesses to a late night gun attack in Dungiven on Wednesday when a number of masked people approached a house in the Rannyglass area and a number of shots were fired.

No-one was injured in the incident which happened around 9.10pm, however, the occupants of the house in the Rannyglass area of the town were left badly shaken.

Windows at the front of the house were smashed, while a car was also damaged. Police and ambulance services were on scene, with many neighbours and onlookers gathering.

Local Sinn Fein councillor Sean McGlinchey condemned the incident.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ at the scene, he said: “What happened here is disgraceful. Nobody should have to put up with this. There are two pensioners in that house and somebody could have been killed. I spoke with the family briefly but they are very upset, badly shaken, and I would appeal to anyone with information to give it to the police.”

Neighbours said they heard multiple shots, while others said it sounded like fireworks.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police in Limavady are appealing for information following the report of a shooting incident in the Rannyglass area of Dungiven on 13 March.

“Shortly after 9.10pm police received a report that masked people had approached a house and a number of shots were fired. No one was injured during this incident, however the occupants of the house were left very badly shaken.”

Detectives would ask anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area or who has any information to contact them at Limavady on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity, Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
