Applications for courses at North West Regional College (NWRC) have increased by 10%, new figures reveal.

Thousands of local students are about to start the new academic year at the college which has campuses in Derry, Limavady and Strabane.

The total number of course applications across the campuses has risen by more than 700 in the past year.

The college says recent developments “have laid the foundations for the promising times which lie ahead for the new cohort of learners.”

This includes increased investment in excess of £1 million at the Strabane campus.

Building on student successes from 2011-12 is a top priority, says college bosses.

Highlights from last year include Strabane girl Lynsey McGarrigle who completed the HND Textiles course with distinctions in every module - the first time this has ever occurred on the course.

Fellow student Oliver Doherty not only saw his fashion designs attracting the attention of pop star Florence Welch, but he also finished runner-up in RTE’s Craftsmaster competition earlier in the year.

Level 3 Childcare students from the Strabane Campus, Laura McDaid and Laura Gallagher, also achieved full distinctions in their course, following in the footsteps of Donegal students Chantel McBrearty, Michelle Boyle and Emma Roulston, who also achieved similar marks before progressing into full-time employment in the childcare sector.

Mature student Tom Hippsley was also celebrating during the year after completing the College’s HNC in Construction & Built Environment course in one year.

Dungiven lad Adrian Canning was another student who shone brightly when he was crowned Northern Irelands’ Vocational Learner of the Year for his excellence in electro-technical engineering.

A limited number of course places are still available at NWRC. To find out more, call into the College or, alternatively, telephone 028 7127 6000 or visit www.nwrc.ac.uk
