Accused of attempting to murder partner
A man has appeared in court accused of attempting to murder his partner with the heel of a stiletto shoe.
Kevin Conaghan, of Lawrence Hill, is charged with attempted murder and obstructing police between July 25 and July 28.
The charges relate to an incident in the Stewarts Terrace area.
Derry Magistrate’s Court heard police received a report of an alleged assault and when they arrived they found the alleged injured party standing at the front door “bleeding significantly from a head wound”.
An investigating officer said the woman’s clothes were covered in blood and there was also blood inside the hallway of the house.
She revealed the alleged injured party was taken to hospital by ambulance and had to receive a total of 15 stitches to her injuries.
It is alleged Conaghan threatened the woman with a small knife and struck her with a six inch stiletto shoe. The court heard further allegations the 38-year-old accused struck the woman with a vodka bottle.
Conaghan was interviewed by police and denied hitting the woman with a bottle or having a knife.
However, the 38-year-old allegedly admitted hitting her on the head with a full can of beer.
Opposing bail, the investigating officer said Conaghan is a “priority and prolific” offender with 230 previous convictions. She said the 38-year-old is an alcoholic who has refused all offers of help and police believe there are “no bail conditions he will stick to”.
The officer added there was a seven year domestic history between Conaghan and the alleged injured party, and police fear he would interfere with witnesses.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott asked the court to consider granting bail with stringent conditions. However, District Judge Barney McElholm refused bail stating: “I can’t think of any bail conditions he would adhere to and I wouldn’t let him within 50 miles of the injured party or any witness”.
Conaghan was remanded in custody and will appear in court again via videolink on August 23.
