Accused of possessing indecent images of children
A 23-year-old man is to stand trial at Derry Crown Court accused of possessing indecent images of children.
Brendan Murphy, whose address was given on court papers as Meadowlands Avenue, Warrenpoint, faces 22 charges of possessing indecent images of children.
He is further charged with possessing an extreme pornographic image.
The offences allegedly occurred between September 15, 2009 and March 2, 2010.
During a brief hearing at the local Magistrate’s Court, the 23-year-old declined to say anything in answer to the charges or to call any evidence on his own behalf.
District Judge Barney McElholm found that there was a prima facie case for Murphy to answer.
He released Murphy on his own bail of £1,000 to appear at the Crown Court for arraignment on November 13.
The judge refused an application by defence solicitor Walter Harvey for a certificate for two counsel to defend the 23-year-old.
He said that while the charges are “very, very serious” there was nothing “substantial, novel or complex” in the case.
The judge added the “serious ramifications” of conviction was not sufficient to grant the application.
