Accused of pouring lighter fluid over man

A 28-year-old has gone on trial at Derry Crown Court accused of pouring lighter fluid over a “vulnerable” man and setting it alight.
Lee Healy, of Asylum Road, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent on January 28 last year.
The Derry Crown Court jury was told that the alleged incident occurred during a drinking session involving Healey and the injured party.
Both men were drinking and went back to a hostel where the injured party was staying.
Staff there were concerned for the man who was described in court as ‘vulnerable’ and tried to persuade him to stay.
However, he left the hostel with Healy and went to another man’s address in the Rosemount area of the city.
There, the jury was told, the man fell asleep and it is alleged Healy got a container of lighter fuel, poured it over him and set it alight.
A third man present in the house poured a bucket of water over the alleged injured party, who then left the house in the company of Healy.
The court was told that when the alleged injured party returned to the hostel, staff called for medical assistance.
He attended Altnagelvin Hospital and was sent home.
However, a short time later was re-admitted and taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he was a patient for more than a week.
Healy was interviewed about the offence and told police that the alleged injured party was so drunk he had been asked to leave the the house, which he did.
It is alleged a can of lighter fuel was found in the house in Rosemount during a police search.
