Arrested at airport

Police arrested a man accused of stealing a pair of wellie boots as he stepped off a flight from Tenerife earlier this week, a court has heard.

Gary Rankin, whose age is not known by the court service, of 18 Lettershandoney Avenue, Drumahoe, denies stealing the wellie boots from Dunnes Stores on September 11, 2008.

Derry Magistrates Court heard Rankin had never appeared in court despite receiving a summons in 2009. Police arrested him on Tuesday at City of Derry Airport when he returned home from a holiday in Tenerife.

Ciaran Harkin, defending, said his client “doesn’t recall why he didn’t turn up to court” but he had lived at the same address for the last twenty four years and police could have contacted him there.

Rankin was released on his own bail of £500 and will appear in court again on June 6.
