Derry school grounds rapist jailed for eight years

A man who raped a teenage girl in the grounds of Derry’s Foyle and Londonderry College has been jailed for eight years.

Adam Titheridge, who has an address in Kent, England, pleaded guilty to raping the 15-year-old girl on July 8, 2011.

The 21-year-old also pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on the same date.

He had initially denied the charges but the day after a jury were sworn to try the case at Derry Crown Court in December Titheridge changed his plea.

Sentencing the 21-year-old on Monday, Judge Stephen Fowler jailed him for eight years and ordered him to spend a further three years on licence. He said the attack was prolonged and persistent, and that the victim had suffered “a profound degree of harm” as a result.

As part of the licence conditions Titheridge must complete a sex offenders treatment programme, reside in accommodation approved by probation and be subject to an electronic tag and a curfew for the first 90 days of his release.

He was banned from working with children or vulnerable adults and must sign the sex offenders register for an indefinite period.

The judge also imposed a sexual offences prevention order which bans Titheridge from associating with children or contacting the injured party.
