Doctor banned from driving

A doctor who was caught driving while more than two times over the limit has been disqualified.

Ian McGinley, whose address was given on court papers as Meadowlands, Portstewart, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol on February 6.

The local magistrates court was told police stopped the 46-year-old as he was driving on the Clooney Road because he was swerving from lane to lane.

When they spoke to him officers smelled alcohol and a breath test gave a reading of 94mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said it was a “very unfortunate incident” which arose out of “difficulties after the recent break up of a 17 year marriage”.

He added that as a result of this conviction McGinley, who was a partner in a medical practice, has lost his business because of this.

Mr MacDermott told the court it was “completely out of character” for the 46-year-old and he “realises the danger he posed”.

Disqualifying McGinley for 16 months, District Judge Barney McElholm also imposed a £200 fine.
