Drugs accused granted anonymity
A judge has granted an anonymity order to a man accused of a drugs offence.
District Judge Barney McElholm granted the anonymity application made by the defendant’s solicitor just after the man’s name had been read out in the courtroom.
He said that the application “should be made before court in chambers”. However, because two co-accused had already been granted anonymity he granted the application for the third defendant.
The man, who was referred to in court as ‘GH’, is charged with conspiring with two other men to possess a controlled drug with intent to supply.
The offence is alleged to have been committed between July 20 and August 1, last year.
During the hearing in Derry Magistrate’s Court, the man spoke only to confirm he understood the charges against him.
An investigating officer told the court he believed he could connect the defendant to the charge.
He was released on continuing bail to appear in court again at a later date.
