Drugs accused refused bail

A man accused of importing £20,000 worth of Mephedrone has been refused bail at the local magistrates court.

James Thomas O’Donnell, whose address was given on court papers as Old School Field, is charged with importing the class B drug between April and October last year and four other drugs offences.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that Parcelforce intercepted a package allegedly addressed to the 22-year-old at an address he shared with his ex-partner. It contained one kilogram of suspected Mephedrone with a street value of £20,000. Opposing bail, an investigating officer said police feared he would commit further offence interfere with the ongoing investigation or fail to turn up to court.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client has no relevant convictions and stringent bail conditions could be imposed to allay police fears. District Judge Mervyn Bates refused bail stating O’Donnell was an “unsuitable candidate”. The 22-year-old will appear in court again on February 21.
