A 29-year-old man accused of an explosives charge has been refused bail at the local Magistrate’s Court.

Joseph Hugh Allen, of Creggan Broadway, is charged with possession of a pipe bomb type improvised explosive device and a tub containing a small arms propellant with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.

The offences allegedly occurred between September 1 and September 14, 2011.

An investigating officer told the court she believed she could connect the defendant to the charge.

The charge relates to items allegedly found in the Melmore Gardens area last September.

It was claimed a pipe bomb type improvised explosive device was found in a locked tool box during police searches, which were conducted in the wake of bomb attacks at the home of a forensic medical officer and a police officer.

The court heard allegations there is fingerprint evidence linking Allen to items found in the locked tool box.

Bail was refused for fear of further offences and the 29-year-old was remanded in custody.

He will appear in court again, via videolink, on September 13.
