Fined for attempted cheque scam
A teenager and 20 year-old man were caught trying to fraudulently cash a giro cheque when it was realised it belonged to a man in his 40s, Limavady Magistrate's Court has heard.
Aaron Ireland (20), of 1 Grange Park, Limavady admitted three counts of making false representation to cash a cheque not belonging to him while Patrick McDonald (19), of 29 Sperrin Road, in the town admitted two similar charges.
The court heard that on April 16 police received a call from the local benefits office reporting that a man had attempted to claim a giro cheque that didn’t belong to him.
McDonald, who presented as the owner of the cheque, appeared in his early 20s despite the fact that the man named on it was born in 1967. McDonald returned the following day and attempted to cash the same cheque.
A defence solicitor said it was “a very amateurish attempt” of a man in poor financial circumstances.
The court heard that Ireland attempted to cash the same cheque on three occasions before being charged.,
Both men were fined 90.
Resident Magistrate Eamon King said: “It was inevitable you were going to be caught in this matter.”
