A local footballer escaped jail when it was revealed he has an 18 month contract with Donegal team Finn Harps.

Sean McCarron, whose address was given as Moore Street, was remanded in custody earlier this month after failing to complete a community service order.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on February 27, 2011.

It was alleged he punched a man waiting in a taxi queue several times in the head, leaving him with bruising and a cut which required five stitches.

In March 2012, McCarron was ordered to complete 180 hours community service. However, an application was made to revoke the order because he had only completed 46 hours and McCarron was remanded in custody.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott told the court his client, who is a former Derry City and Institute player, has a contract to play for Finn Harps for 18 months.

The solicitor also handed a letter into the court to confirm this.

He said the time in custody has been a “salutory lesson” to the 21-year-old and he has a “promising future ahead of him”.

District Judge Barney McElholm revoked the order and suspended a three month jail term for 18 months.

He told the 21-year-old the letter was from “someone respected by this court”.

The judge also ordered McCarron to pay £200 compensation to the injured party.
