A 24 year old man charged with possession of cannabis, and possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply, has been granted bail at Derry Magistrate’s Court.

Jason Harkin of Oakfield Crescent, was arrested on Friday after a planned PSNI search of his home.

Harkin is also charged with possession of fireworks without a licence, throwing a firework in a street, namely Oakfield Crescent and a number of road traffic offences including travelling without insurance.

The court heard that police officers discovered two bars of suspected cannabis weighing 263g and 264g each. District Judge Barney McElholm was told by the prosecution that 37 packets of fireworks were also discovered.

During police interview Harkin claimed that the fireworks and drugs had been in the boot of a car which he purchased recently. He later admitted that he hid the bars as “his head was all over the place.” A number of clear plastic bags and a set of scales were also found during the search. Harkin claimed that these were due to his previous use of mephadrone.

The court also heard that Harkin had received court bail on November 7 for motoring offences. Judge McElholm said: “So all the while he was applying for bail here, he has two bars of cannabis at home?” Police opposed the bail application due to “the risk of further offending and the defendant has raised concerns for his safety and we share those concerns,” the court was told.

Defending solicitor Paddy McGurk said: “The forensic tests on the seized drugs could take a considerable amount of time.”

Bail was set at £2,000 with an added surety of £2,000, the defendant was ordered to observe a curfew and report daily to Strand Road Police Station. He was also ordered not to be in possession of a mobile phone.

“Any breach and you’ll be remanded,” warned Judge McElholm.

The case was adjourned until January 10.
