‘Horrific damage’ to girlfriend’s house

A 23-year-old man who caused “horrific” damage to his girlfriend’s house has been ordered to complete 200 hours community service.

Jason Kieran McGrory, of The Meadows, pleaded guilty to criminal damage of household items and doors on April 29.

Derry Magistrate’s Court was told police were called to the woman’s house to investigate an ongoing domestic incident. They entered the house and found furniture and household items “strewn across the inside of the property”.

The woman told officers they had a disagreement and McGrory kicked in a bathroom door.

When the 23-year-old was arrested, he claimed he had been drinking and had no memory of the incident.

Defence counsel Nicola Rowntree told the court McGrory had apologised to his girlfriend and paid for the damage.

She added that he hopes to move back in with the injured party and their children once the court proceedings were over.

District Judge Barney McElholm said this was a “frightening” incident. He warned the 23-year-old he “needed to do something about your temper”.
