Jailed for breaking man’s jaw

A Limavady man has been jailed for breaking a man’s jaw in a single-punch attack outside a nightclub in the town.

Ronan Slater (21), of 3 Castle Park, Limavady admitted a charge of punching a man, causing grievous bodily harm outside The Depot nightclub on April 22, 2012.

Imposing sentence at Derry Crown Court, Judge Piers Grant said CCTV footage showed that the victim did not see the single-punch attack coming.

The court heard that the footage showed the defendant walking away and raising his arms “in apparent celebration”.

The injured party sustained a fracture to the right side of his jaw which required surgery.

Judge Grant said that although there had been “provocation” previous to the attack but that a period of time had elapsed.

He said it was a serious assault in which the victim was “oblivious to the presence and certainly oblivious to the intentions of the accused”.

He added that such a level of violence was not justified in any circumstances.

He said the actions of the defendant made it clear that he was celebrating, having hit a man who was “given no warning and had no opportunity to defend himself”.

He added that Slater made a full admission of his guilt at the earliest opportunity.

Slater was given a 15 month custodial sentence, with half of that time to be served on licence.
