Man admits gross indecency

A former Derry City Council employee has admitted committing gross indecency with a child.

Daniel Martin ‘Speedy’ Carlin, of Ballyarnett Village, had initially denied two charges of indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

However, after a jury were sworn to try the case at Derry Crown Court, two charges of gross indecency were added to the indictment.

The 61-year-old was re-arraigned in the presence of the jury and admitted these offences, which occurred between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007.

A prosecution barrister applied for the indecent assault charges to be “left on the books.”

The court also heard that Carlin has a criminal record. He was convicted of voyeurism in 2008 relating to an incident when he was employed as a supervisor in Templemore Sports Complex.

Judge Stephen Fowler adjourned sentencing for a probation pre-sentence report, a victim impact report and defence medical reports to be compiled.

He released Carlin on continuing bail, however warned him this was “absolutely no indication of how the case is likely to be dealt with.”

The 61-year-old was ordered to sign the sex offenders register and will appear in court again on June 27.
