Man caught driving at 100mph

A Drumahoe man who was caught driving at 100mph by police has been fined a total of £900.

Thomas Andrew Hyndman, of Milltown View in the village, pleaded guilty to taking a car without authority, having no insurance, being an unaccompanied learner driver and speeding.

The charges relate to an incident on October 6, last year on the Foyle Bridge.

Derry Magistrates Court heard police saw the 22-year-old travelling at around 100mph on the bridge. He was stopped near Nelson Drive and admitted taking his girlfriend’s car without permission and having no insurance to drive the car.

A defence solicitor told the court his client received a phone call from a friend and made a “spur of the moment” decision to take the car to go and collect this friend.

It was revealed Hyndman has similar previous convictions.

Fining the 22-year-old, District Judge Barney McElholm said the “speed was absolutely outrageous”.

He also disqualified him from driving for eighteen months.
