Man charged over teen beating robbery

A 21-year-old man has appeared in court accused of assaulting a teenage boy during an attempted robbery in co.Derry.

Michael Mongan, of White Rise, Dunmurry, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to 16-year-old Philip Convery.

He is charged with the attempted robbery of £10,000 in cash during an alleged incident at a house on Mayogill Road, Knockloughrim on June 5.

The 21-year-old is further charged with assaulting the teenagers grandmother and uncle, possessing a firearm and iron bar with intent to commit an indictable offence and driving whilst disqualified.

During a brief hearing at Derry Magistrates Court, Mongan confirmed he understood the charges.

An investigating officer said that Philip Convery sustained a fractured skull in the alleged incident.

However, he confirmed the teen is “fit enough” to provide a statement to police and to take part in an identification procedure.

Defence solicitor Adrian Harvey told the court there would be no application for bail at this time.

Mongan was remanded in custody and will appear in court again via videolink on June 28.
