A 31-year-old man has been acquitted of rape.

Stewart Alson Ward, of Lyndhurst Road, had denied raping a 21-year-old woman and sexually assaulting her on June 26, last year.

Following a five day trial, a Derry Crown Court jury unanimously acquitted him of sexual assault.

The jury of eleven people found him not guilty of rape by a majority verdict.

Ward wept in the dock after he was acquitted by the jury and was told by the judge “you are free to go”.

The complainant also wept when the verdict was delivered.
