Man jailed for two months for assaulting police officer

A man who threw himself down a set of stairs as he was being restrained by police has been jailed for two months.

Stephen Gillen, whose address was given on court papers as no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to three assaults on police and disorderly behaviour.

The charges relate to an incident in the Cornshell Fields area of the city on August 5.

Derry Magistrates Court heard police were called to the estate because the 27-year-old was highly intoxicated and when they arrived they were flagged down by his mother.

She told officers that Gillen was drunk and in her house and she didn’t want him there.

As the 27-year-old was being escorted from the house, he threw himself down stairs on top of a female police officer causing her to sustain minor injuries.

He then began to shout at his mother, calling her a “touting c***” before attempting to headbutt a police officer.

Gillen kicked two other officers as he was being arrested.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott conceded his client’s record “isn’t good” and revealed he had only been released from prison at the end of July.

He said Gillen doesn’t remember anything about the incident as he had been drinking neat vodka and was very drunk.

The solicitor said the 27-year-old has expressed remorse for his behaviour.
