Man remanded in custody over £800K cannabis seizure

A Derry man has been remanded in custody following the seizure of an estimated £800,000 of herbal cannabis.

Mark William McPhillips (33), of 103A Elmvale, Culmore Road appeared at Derry Magistrate’s Court on three charges related to the drugs haul by police officers on Monday.

The accused faces charges of possession of herbal cannabis and possession of the class B substance with intent to supply. He faces a further charge of fraudulently importing herbal cannabis at Glengalliagh Road on May 14.

During the brief hearing, the accused spoke only to confirm that he understood the charges against him.

The court heard that McPhillips was also arrested on foot of an outstanding bench warrant, for which he was remanded in custody to appear at Omagh Magistrate’s Court on June 12.

No application was made for bail.

He was remanded in custody on the drugs charges to appear at Derry Magistrate’s Court via video link on June 7.
