Man who attacked girlfriend “like an animal” jailed for seven years

A man who subjected his girlfriend to a “prolonged” and “horrendous” attack has been jailed for seven years.
Greg Deyzel Logue, whose address was given on court papers as Duddy’s Court in the Waterside area of the city, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent, common assault, making a threat to kill and possession of a knife.
The 32-year-old also admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on July 13, 2011.
Derry Crown Court heard that during the incident Logue hit the woman with a vodka bottle, punched, kicked and bit her.
He also smashed a TV over her head and tied a clothes line around her neck and threatened to push her downstairs.
Jailing Logue, Judge Piers Grant said the victim had sustained “dreadful injuries” in the repeated and prolonged assault.
He added it was quite clear the 32-year-old was someone who “quite clearly cannot control your behaviour or temper”.
The judge said women “are entitled to protection from people like you” and told Logue he had “acted like an animal”.
He imposed a determinate sentence of seven years, half of which will be spent in custody with the remainder spent on licence.
The judge also imposed an extended licence period of two years because Logue has been assessed as posing a risk of harm.
He further granted a restraining order which bans the 32-year-old from harassing or contacting his victim indefinitely.
