Men smashed windows in “vigilante” attack
Two men who were involved in “vigilante activities” by smashing windows have had an eight month jail term suspended for three years.
Eamon Farrell (26) and 24-year-old Patrick McGlynn, both of Madison Avenue, Eglinton, pleaded guilty to five charges of criminal damage on July 20, last year.
McGlynn also admitted resisting and assaulting police on the same date.
Sentencing of a third man, 23-year-old Patrick Joseph Farrell, of Cherry Drive in the village, was adjourned for a probation pre-setence report to be compiled. He will appear in court again next month.
Derry Magistrate’s Court heard that the three men smashed the windows of a neighbour’s house. They also smashed the windows in three vehicles belonging to the man and his partner.
The men were named by the injured party and were apprehended by police a short time later.
CS spray had to be deployed when police attempted to arrest McGlynn as he struggled with officers and kicked one of them.
Defence counsel for Eamon Farrell told the court that his client in his “drunken state had a perceived justification for what he did”.
He added that the 26-year-old is due to move to a different area and should not have any further dealings with the injured party.
Defence counsel for McGlynn added that his client’s behaviour was also motivated by the amount of alcohol comsumed.
Suspending the jail terms, District Judge Barney McElholm said the men were “going to engage in vigilante activities” and “as usual with people who take the law into their own hands they got it hopelessly wrong”.
He ordered the men to pay £500 each in compensation to the injured parties and imposed a restraining order for seven years.
