A 50-year-old Derry teacher has appeared in court accused of attempting to murder her son at the weekend.

Treasa Doherty, of 27 Garden City, is charged with the attempted murder of Sean O’Connor, aged 20, on Saturday, February 4.

When the charge was put to her yesterday, Doherty wept and confirmed she understood it.

An investigating officer told Derry Magistrate’s Court he believed he could connect the accused to the charge. He added that police would be opposing bail because they believed further offences could be committed as a result of her “long standing drink problem.”

Applying for bail, defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court his client had no criminal record.

Mr Quigley said it was accepted by the prosecution and defence that “what happened here arose out of a fall-out between two people who have unfortunately developed a problem with alcohol.”

The solicitor said Doherty could be released on bail to live at her father’s home in the Culmore Road area of the city and her “extended family network” would assist her in getting help for her “long standing difficulties.” He added that “it is an extremely unfortunate situation” and it is hoped Doherty’s son will make a good recovery in hospital.

District Judge Barney McElholm released Doherty on her own bail of £500 with one surety of £500 to live at her father’s home. He banned her from consuming alcohol and from having any contact with her son.

Mr McElholm also ordered the 50-year-old to attend her GP immediately to get advice for her addiction problems.

Doherty will appear in court again on March 5.

A spokesperson for the Belfast Trust confirmed that the alleged injured party Mr O’Connor remains in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital.
