Pair to go on trial for child cruelty

A former couple have appeared at Derry Crown Court charged with committing a string of child cruelty offences.

The man and woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of their alleged victims, have been returned for trial at Derry Crown Court on February 18 when they will face a total of 22 charges. The charges relate to offences alleged to have been committed against two children in Derry between January 1, 2006 and June 7, 2011.

The alleged victims were under 16 years-old at the time.

The woman faces a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, nine charges of common assault and six charges of child cruelty.

Her former partner is accused of two charges of common assault and four charges of child cruelty.

They were released on their own bail and returned for trial on February 18 with a review hearing scheduled for January 15.

A prosecution barrister said the trial is expected to last around two weeks.
