Pyjama-clad passenger urinated at crash scene

A judge has told a Derry woman who urinated in front of a “heavy flow of traffic” her behaviour was “despicable”.

District Judge Barney McElholm made the comment as 41-year-old Denise Hynds appeared at the local Magistrate’s Court.

Hynds, of Shepherds Glen, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour and indecent behaviour on October 7, last year.

The court heard that Hynds was a passenger in a car which was involved in an accident on the Glenshane Road. She was abusive to police at the scene and was intoxicated.

The 41-year-old initially told police that she was the driver of the car and wanted “to take the rap” for the accident and continued to shout loudly.

Hynds had to be physically removed from the road for her own safety and she then pulled down her pyjama bottoms and underwear and urinated on the road.

The court heard there were around ten people in the area at the time and there was also a “heavy flow of traffic”.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said alcohol was the main factor in the incident and the 41-year-old is “deeply ashamed and embarrassed by her actions”.

He added that his client wished to apologise to the court.

District Judge McElholm said he would give Hynds “a chance” and suspended a four month jail term for three years.

He also imposed a 12 month probation order, stating that “the only way to stop her offending is to stop her drinking”.

The judge warned the 41-year-old if she appeared in court again or did not complete the probation order she “will go straight to prison”.
