The parents of nine year-old Raychel Ferguson believe she was “killed by Altnagelvin hospital”, an inquiry into her death has heard.

Raychel, who would have celebrated her 21st birthday tomorrow, died 36 hours after being admitted to Altnaglevin with stomach pains on June 7, 2001.

At an inquiry investigating the death of the Derry schoolgirl, Stephen Quinn, Senior Counsel for the Ferguson family described the nursing care she received as a “shambles”.

He added: “The parents feel very strongly, that they were not told the whole truth about Raychel’s death. They feel that Raychel was killed by the hospital.”

The inquiry at Banbridge Courthouse was told that a catalogue of flaws and lack of communication contributed to Raychel’s death following an operation to remove her appendix.
