Rioting accused jailed for damaging electronic tag

A man currently on bail accused of rioting during last years Apprentice Boys parade has been jailed for a month for damaging his electonic tag.

Simon James Whiteman, whose address was given on court papers as no fixed abode, is charged with criminal damage between July 27 and August 13.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 26-year-old is currently on bail for a total of twelve offences relating to disorder in the Bogside following last year’s Apprentice Boys parade.

An electronic tag was one of the bail conditions imposed on him in July but when he was arrested earlier this week his tag was removed.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott told the court that Whiteman had left his bail address and took the tag off when he “panicked”.

He revealed that the 26-year-old had been at large for about two weeks.
