Sex offender failed to notify police of new address

A convicted sex offender failed to notify police of an address he was staying at because he feared they would expose he was having an affair, a court has heard.

Christopher Temple, whose address was given on court papers as Maureen Avenue, pleaded guilty to one charge of failing to notify police between March 18, 2011 and February 29, 2012.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard that Temple was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for five years in February 2009. The order required him to notify police of any address that was used for seven or more days.

It was revealed that in March 2011, the 28-year-old began a relationship with a woman who lived in Belfast and stayed at her address on a number of occasions. However, he did not notify police.

When questioned by officers he admitted staying there but said he was “afraid” to tell them because “they might notify his girlfriend in this city about his relationship in Belfast”.

Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said it was “not a deliberate attempt to avoid the safeguards of the order. It was more a side effect of being in a relationship which was morally wrong but not legally wrong”.

Deputy District Judge Nigel Broderick suspended a two month jail term for two years.
