Six months for Derry mum on drugs charges

A Derry mother of two has been sentenced to six months imprisonment after pleading guilty to eight drugs charges.

This morning at Derry’s crown Court Judge Piers Grant told Jeanette McConomy of 13 Kerrigan Close: “Let the message go out from this court that if you mess in or trade in drugs you’ll go to jail.”

McConomy pleaded guilty to six counts of being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs and two charges of being concerned in the supply of Class C drugs.

The charges arose from a PSNI raid on 32 year old McConomy’s home on October 29, 2010.

The court was told that a small amount of cannabis resin, two mobile telephones and a sim card were found.

Phone analysis revealed up to 60 messages to different people concerning the sale of drugs including Cannabis, Amphetamine, Mephedrone and Diazepam.

Under caution the defendant admitted the drugs were “mainly for her own use.”

Judge Grant told the defendant during today’s sentencing: “There was a significant number of texts concerned in the supply of drugs. Clear messages were discovered over a period of two months. They showed you are readily familiar with the slang in the trading of drugs, these included discussions on the price of drugs. Drugs are a curse and your involvement in them was significant. A back problem was put to the court by way of explaining your cannabis use, but you dealt in more than cannabis.”

At a hearing last week McConomy was granted bail in order to put the necessary childcare arrangements in place.

During that hearing last Tuesday Judge Grant stated: “You traded in drugs and now are preparing to serve a custodial sentence despite having children. The point needs to be made that children will not prevent custodial sentences being handed out.”

Sentencing McConomy to six months imprisonment on each of the eight counts Judge Grant concluded: “I feel this is the minimum, suitable taking into account your back problem, children, guilty pleas and previous clear record.”

It was ordered that the sentences would run concurrently.
