Suspended jail term for assaulting ex

A 24-year-old who admitted assaulting his ex-girlfriend has received a suspended jail term.

Thomas NcGonagle, whose address was given on court papers as Rockmills, was found guilty of three charges of common assault on March 6, last year.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that one of the victims was the 24-year-old’s ex-girlfirend. He also assaulted two other men.

The court heard he went to his ex girlfriend’s house on the night in question and a “fracas ensued”.

A defence barrister told the court his client “now accepts his actions were completely wrong”.

He said the assaults were “born out of a relationship that soured”.

The barrister told the court McGonagle has no history of violence towards women and wants to “start afresh”.

Suspending a six month jail term for three years, District Judge Barney McElholm said the 24-year-old “should consider yourself very lucky not to be going straight to prison”.

He also ordered McGonagle to pay the victims a total of £750 compensation.
