Told police he was John Fashanu

A who called himself John Fashanu after directing profanities at a female police officer has appeared at Limavady Magistrate’s Court.
Brian Quigley (29), of 43 Lilac Avenue, Limavady admitted using disorderly behaviour and obstructing police.
The court heard that on October 28 last year police observed the defendant being escorted off the premises of Sweet nightclub by doormen.
When the doormen released him he struck out at them, before shouting obscenities and giving them the finger.
Police approached the defendant and asked to him to leave the scene and go home. He then threatened to spit on the doorstaff and was warned about his behaviour by officers. He told a female police officer “I will put you on the ground” and used further profanities towards her.
He was then arrested and identified himself as John Fashanu, the court was told.
Defence solicitor David Brewster said his client was very intoxicated, having drunk nine pints over the course of the evening. He added that it was an evening that “went badly wrong” for his client.
He said Quigley remembered an incident in the nightclub when he intervened to stop a row between others and it resulted in him being asked to leave by staff.
Mr Brewster said his client recalled a “fairly jocular exchange” with a police officer but that was clearly not the case. Quigley was “completely embarrassed” by the incident and had apologised.
Deputy District Judge Mervyn Bates said that threatening to spit on the door staff was an aggravating factor and ordered that a pre sentence report by drawn up by the probation service.
The case was adjourned until February 13.
