Woman disqualified from driving

A Drumahoe woman who knocked down a cyclist has been disqualified from driving for a year.

Sarah Kelly, of Copperthorpe, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily injury by driving without due care and attention on January 2.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 44-year-old knocked down the cyclist as she approached a junction. The court was told it was dark at the time of the accident, however the cyclist was wearing high visibility clothing.

The injured party sustained a badly broken shoulder and had to have surgery. It was revealed further surgery may be required in the future. Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said Kelly is “absolutely mortified at having injured someone” and wished to apologise to him. He added the 44-year-old has an “absolutely spotless record”.

Disqualifying Kelly, District Judge Barney McElholm said the case “illustrates once again the need for drivers to be vigilant when driving”. He also fined her £500.
