A 22-year-old woman has been jailed for six years today for stabbing another female during a drunken row.

Donna McKeefrey, whose address was given as c/o Hydebank, pleaded guilty to causing wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Derry Crown Court heard that the stabbing occurred on December 10, 2011, when the two women were drinking together at the injured party’s Waterside home.

After a short time a fight broke out between McKeefrey and the woman. The 22-year-old grabbed a knife and the injured party was stabbed numerous times.

The court heard that the injured party had multiple wounds to her arms, legs, abdomen, head and neck.

One wound to her temple was five centimetres long and required five sutures, while another wound to her abdomen was three centimetres long, requiring four sutures.

When interviewed McKeefrey said she had grabbed the knife to stop the other woman from getting it.

Judge Piers Grant said that reports had assessed McKeefrey as being a high risk of causing serious harm to others and that there was a high risk of further offences.

He said the incident had “a considerable impact” on the injured party who was “anxious and fearful and there is no doubt this was a frightening experience for her.”

The judge said the attack displayed “an escalation in the level of violence” by the 22-year-old, who has a criminal record.

He added that drugs and alcohol misuse had played a part in McKeefrey’s offending but said it was up to her to address these issues.

Judge Grant said there was an absence of premeditation in the crime and said that the injured party was not entirely innocent.

He imposed a determinate sentence of six years and extended McKeefrey’s licence period by two years.
