Women on drugs charges granted anonymity

A 27-year-old woman who was described in court as ‘a significant figure’ in the supply of drugs in the Foyle area appeared at Derry Magistrate’s Court today.

The woman and a 19-year-old woman were both granted anonymity by Deputy District Judge Brian Archer when they appeared in connection with the discovery of drugs valued at £13,000 in Derry on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old was referred to in court as defendant CD while the other woman was called defendant AB.

CD was charged with possessing cannabis with intent to supply, possessing ecstasy and being concerned in the supply of drugs.

AB was charged with possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

A police officer told the court police searched a house in the Waterside area of Derry.

In a bedroom they found half a kilo of cannabis, scales, £400 and some white powder.

Downstairs they found a kilo of cannabis wrapped in cling film inside a woman’s handbag.

Both women denied any knowledge of the drugs.

The police officer said he believed the women, who both wept in the dock, would be on the middle rungs of the drug supply ladder.

He opposed bail for fear of further offences and possible interference with witnesses.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said the defendants were two young women, neither of whom had any record.

The women were released on their own bail of £500, two sureties of £750, a curfew and they have to wear an electronic tag.

The women are also forbidden from having a mobile phone or associating with each other.

They will appear in court again on October 19.
